Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in North America. Over the last decade, the number of cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has roughly doubled to 30 000 per year, and evidence suggests that only about 1 case in 10 is reported. Some of the increase in incidence may be due to better recognition and better reporting, but some of the increase is certainly the result of the evolving ecology of Lyme disease.
