Although diet and pharmacologic manipulation may help in lowering serum lipid levels, nevertheless, neither the author of the editorial nor the authors of the article discuss the role of exercise. Many physicians, epidemiologists, and informed members of the public are aware that aerobic activity, when quantified as to duration, frequency, and intensity, may facilitate weight control as well as controlling serum lipid levels.3,4Over a hundred years ago, an eminent Bostonian, Oliver Wendell Holmes, MD,5 remarked "I firmly believe that if the whole materia medica as now used could be sunk to the bottom of the sea, it would be all the better for mankind—and all the worse for the fishes."
