    I was interested in the article by Ali et al in the October 1978 issue of the Archives (138:1534-1537, 1978). I think it is quite interesting, but it would be worth pointing out an experience I have had. I have found that with most demand pacemakers, if the magnet is manipulated properly over the pulse generator, it is possible to turn the unit off rather than just convert it to the fixed-rate mode. Under these circumstances, if the patient has a rhythm of his own, it will come out and also aid in the diagnosis of possible myocardial infarction. We have done this in a number of patients with good results, although we insist that a physician rather than a technician do the manipulating in the attempt to turn the unit off.
