    We read with interest the article by Boxer et al and the editorial comment by Mallete that appeared in the May issue of the Archives (137:588-590 and 572-573, respectively, 1977). Dr Mallette raised the question of whether secondary hyperparathyroidism contributes to the anemia of chronic uremia. In our experience, subtotal parathyroidectomy or suppression of parathyroid activity with the administration of 1α-hydroxy-D3 may result in improvement of the anemia in some, though not all, patients receiving hemodialysis.1In an independent study, Zingraff et al made similar observations.2 In addition, they showed that parathyroidectomy or the administration of 1α-hydroxy-D3 leads to regression of the marrow fibrosis of uremic osteitis fibrosa and thus improves the bone marrow function of these patients.These preliminary findings suggest that the suppression of the hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland in chronic uremia may be beneficial for the treatment of the anemia of
