Shock has been a subject of great interest to COL Hardaway as evidenced by his years of experimental laboratory studies at several hospitals, experience which resulted in numerous publications. With this background, he designed and set up a shock unit at Walter Reed General Hospital. From his staff he picked surgical research teams to go to the Republic of Vietnam to study the numerous aspects of shock in the wounded patient.
