TY - JOUR T1 - CHanges in electrocardiogram and serum potassium values following glucose ingestion AU - Dear H, Buncher C, Sawayama T Y1 - 1969/07/01 N1 - 10.1001/archinte.1969.00300170027005 JO - Archives of Internal Medicine SP - 25 EP - 28 VL - 124 IS - 1 N2 - Changes in the electrocardiogram, and blood glucose, serum potassium, and serum sodium levels were measured after a standard glucose tolerance test was given to 50 persons; 22 were normal, 18 were diabetic, and 10 had heart disease. A decrease in T-wave amplitude and a lowering of serum potassium level following glucose ingestion was seen in most individuals. However, the degree of change was significantly greater in the group with heart disease than in either the normal or the diabetic group for both T-wave amplitude and serum potassium. The finding that the diabetics more closely resembled the normal group than the group with heart disease with respect to T-wave and potassium changes argues against glucose as the major determinant of these changes; insulin may be the responsible agent.
