Skillful and painstakingly prepared graphic illustrations, rather than diagrams, are presented in photograph form as objective evidence of his findings. The book contains useful collected information as well as original data regarding the evolution of the mammalian kidney. It is, however, in the presentation of the development of the human kidney and the critical study of the structural detail of the renal tubular system that this book makes its mark. Here the importance of the connecting tubule is stressed. This structure, largely ignored by most texts, is shown to arise from the nephronic vesicle rather than from the collecting tubular system and forms a significant part of the bulk of the adult renal medulla.
