N2  - The purpose of this book, "to bring together under a single cover a summary of the best current knowledge available in all phases of treatment of the alcoholic," is laudatory and idealistic. Its editor, Ronald J. Catanzaro, MD, chairman of the North American Association of Alcoholism Programs, has designed the book for "two main types of readers: (1) the person engaged in planning treatment programs, large or small; and (2) the person desiring a comprehensive guide to treating the individual alcoholic." The text is written by 45 "active workers in the field"; 42 chapters are divided into major sections covering "General Aspects of Alcoholism and Treatment," "Special Treatment Methods and Settings," "Treatment Research Studies," "Prevention and Planning Future Rehabilitation Programs," and "Treatment in Neighboring Cultures." In spite of the book's avowed orientation toward "total treatment," no chapter is devoted to individual psychotherapy with the alcoholic.As with most publications of
