The purpose of the book is to bring together a discussion of all the various diseases which may be associated with dyspnea so that when a doctor is confronted with a patient whose primary symptom is dyspnea, he will have an opportunity to find in this volume a discussion of most of the diseases which are associated with dyspnea.The editors and contributors never agree on a definition of dyspnea. In reading the book, one finds that dyspnea can be a symptom, a sign, or in some cases a disease. In the first chapter, Arthur Olson discusses "What is dyspnea?"
