N2  - In this excellent and timely book, Dr. Bland points out that in the past five years there have been major advances in several aspects of electrolyte and water metabolism, for example, the anatomy of body water and electrolytes, total body composition, intracellular hydrogen ion concentrations, aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone control of salt and water metabolism, tubular transport systems and the interaction of water, electrolyte, hydrogen ion, and connective tissue. The first part of the book and several reference chapters deal with biochemical and physiologic descriptions and relate these to the later chapters which deal with the general areas of disease.Dr. Bland goes on to point out in the preface that medicine is a polyscience, and for the investigator to carry out research, he must be especially trained in at least one of the medical sciences.
