The conference was planned by the New York Academy of Sciences and made possible through the support of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. The formal papers were presented by scientists with years of research experience and were essentially reviews of the researches of the various investigators on (1) the protein needs of man for various stages of the life cycle, (2) the incidence and characteristics of severe protein malnutrition in young children in many parts of the world, and (3) protein nutrition in terms of amino acids, including the problem of possible amino acid imbalance. Each series of papers was discussed by leaders in the field. The discussions, which frequently were in direct conflict with the interpretations of the speakers, were not always as well documented as the original papers.
