Some cases of esophageal cancer in HIV-infected individuals may well be linked to HPV infection. We observed 1 HIV-infected individual who had an HPV-related condyloma of his esophagus (Figure), who was not included in our published series because we only included cases of invasive esophageal carcinoma. Others have reported similar individuals with HPV-related esophagitis.1 Recent published data support an association between high-risk HPV and esophageal carcinomas,2- 3 although causation is not established and is controversial.
