TY - JOUR T1 - TRanslating weight loss and physical activity programs into the community to preserve mobility in older, obese adults in poor cardiovascular health AU - Rejeski W, Brubaker PH, Goff DC, Jr, et al Y1 - 2011/05/23 N1 - 10.1001/archinternmed.2010.522 JO - Archives of Internal Medicine SP - 880 EP - 886 VL - 171 IS - 10 N2 - There is substantial burden among older adults from cardiovascular disease (CVD)1 and the cardiometabolic dysfunction caused by obesity that poses a high risk for CVD.2- 3 The 10-year incidence rate of coronary heart disease in the Cardiovascular Health Study among older adults aged 65 to 74 years was 39.6 and 22.3 per 1000 person-years for men and women, respectively.4 In this same study, the rates for stroke were also high, and there was a 9% increase in congestive heart failure with each year of aging in this cohort; more than 40% of older adults ages 65 to 74 years have the metabolic syndrome.2 Diseases of the heart and circulatory system are second only to arthritis as a major cause of physical disability among people 60 years or older,5 and obesity compromises mobility in aging.6 With an expanding older adult population in the United States7 and the epidemic of obesity,6 effective and scalable public health measures are needed to confront this challenge.
