According to the most recent United States Renal Data System (USRDS) annual report,1 while most patients may have no contraindications to either peritoneal dialysis (PD) or hemodialysis (HD),2 in-center HD was used by more than 90% of the 359 367 dialysis patients as of December 31, 2007. Peritoneal dialysis, which is primarily a home-based, self-care therapy, was used by only 7.2% of patients,1 a marked decline from the 17% of patients who used PD soon after it was introduced in this country in 1979.3 The decline in PD use is viewed as a disturbing trend,3- 6 given that PD provides opportunities for greater patient autonomy and satisfaction and potential survival benefits at a lower annual cost than in-center HD.7- 11 SN - 0003-9926 M3 - doi: 10.1001/archinternmed.2010.361 UR - http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/archinternmed.2010.361 ER -
