Rhee et al provide data suggesting that exposure to iodinated contrast media, which are used in a wide variety of imaging studies, results in development of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Given that exposure to iodinated contrast media is also associated with renal dysfunction, these data provide another reason for clinicians to think carefully about the value of imaging before ordering studies.
