AB When a great honor comes as a complete surprise, even a year is not long enough to marshal the ability to express appropriate thanks. The truly great men who have received the Kober Medal have all said modestly that they did not deserve it. No one agreed with them. For myself, I can only say that, deserve it or not, I am very happy and proud to accept this distinguished medal from the Association and very grateful to Dick Richards for his generous presentation.Before I engage in the theme of my response, I want to mention three remarkable men who greatly influenced my life. A year at Hopkins with Dr. Theodore Janeway opened my eyes to the mechanisms of disease, Bill Palmer was a generous and inspiring Chief, and Bob Loeb has been my guiding partner for many happy years.The theme of my response is discipline; both external,
