AB J. Arnold Bargen has had a special interest in ulcerative colitis for 44 years and now has summarized his experiences very briefly in this book. The brevity of the effort is remarkable in view of the patient-material from which Bargen's experience has accumulated. There is only one page on etiology, for example, but perhaps a general essay on the disease is what is needed at the moment, rather than another detailed statistical study.Many of Bargen's original thoughts on ulcerative colitis have been reinforced as the years have passed. The historical implications of some of them must be counted as particularly significant, especially in view of the habit of this era for thinking cycles, or maybe just vogues of ignorance, to complete themselves within only a few months. Thus, Bargen continues to embrace streptococcal etiology for ulcerative colitis. He does not become entangled in the granulomatous enterocolitis vs ulcerative colitis
