AB This volume reproduces the proceedings of a symposium held in the Pfizer Postgraduate Institute in Edinburgh. A variety of subjects related to acute myocardial infarction were discussed by 62 participants. Considerable time was allotted to various aspects of coronary care units. The problems of management, evaluation of success, and organization of such units in relation to community needs received particular attention. As Thomas Killip wisely remarked, the data on mortality experience in treatment of acute myocardial infarction in any hospital will be greatly influenced by the criteria employed for diagnosis, interval from onset to admission, whether there was selective or random admissions to the unit, competence of nurses, and quality of management of ancillary therapeutic measures. He stated, "Each of these factors may have a bearing on the clinical results, yet it is disappointing how few reports available to date provide sufficient information to enable the disintererested observer to evaluate
