AB This is a book difficult to categorize. It seems to be an attempt to unify clinical nephrology and renal pathology into a single presentation, an effort that does not quite succeed.The 33 authors of Structural Basis of Renal Disease are almost all internationally recognized clinicians or pathologists who, unfortunately, have produced a hybrid that has most of the defects of a hybrid with few of its virtues. There are several excellent chapters, but as a textbook of renal pathology it is clearly inferior to Heptinstall's brilliant Pathology of the Kidney. As a text of clinical nephrology, the work can scarcely measure up to any one of several outstanding reference tomes in the field, eg, Strauss and Welt and Hamburger.Much of the material is duplicated in different chapters, while many sections present only the sketchiest outline of a given subject.
