AB Burgen and Mitchell have revised the late Sir John Gaddum's wellknown text on pharmacology. Their aim, as was his, to design a book for medical students and for science and pharmacy students is fulfilled. The new authors have emphasized chemical structure and minimize therapeutics, intentionally.References for additional general reading in pharmacology are included as well as specific ones at the end of each chapter. Lady Gaddum has assured the authors and the reader that the index in this edition is as good as its predecessors.In addition to general chapters on classes of drugs, such as central nervous system stimulants and depressants, this sixth edition includes a reasonably good introductory chapter on "General Pharmacology" and an excellent closing chapter on "Quantitative and Human Pharmacology."Students of medicine and pharmacy in the United States might discover this paperback fits neatly into the starboard pocket of their white coats.
