AB This short monograph on the vagus nerve attempts to present an overview of this complex neural system which crosses many boundaries in the present era of specialization in medical writing. Such a volume, while presenting no new information, does provide a good review of the clinically pertinent anatomy and the role of the vagus in visceral physiology. There is some discussion of the clinical manifestations of diseases involving this nerve.Parasympathetic functions are briefly discussed, but the overall parasympathetic system is not. This is not a fault; this book was not intended to be a review of the entire parasympathetic system.This reviewer found the style wordy and, at times, tangential. Better and expanded use of diagrams and other visual aids would have simplified some of the descriptive material, but these faults seem relatively minor.
