AB Evaluation and selection of recipients and living-related donors from renal transplantation at Duke University Medical Center between January 1965 and June 1968 has shown that 68% of 512 patients with chronic uremia were unsuitable from the standpoints of age and coincident medical diseases. Lack of a donor would have excluded 48 patients: there were no apparent reasons for exclusion of another 48. Complete donor evaluations were performed in 380 available parents and siblings of 69 acceptable recipients. An acceptable living-related donor could not be identified for over two thirds of these uremic patients, primarily because of immunological unsuitability. Interestingly, 67 of the 129 allegedly healthy donor candidates who were evaluated medically exhibited significant abnormalities that precluded their being accepted.
