Lack of a donor would have excluded 48 patients: there were no apparent reasons for exclusion of another 48. Complete donor evaluations were performed in 380 available parents and siblings of 69 acceptable recipients. An acceptable living-related donor could not be identified for over two thirds of these uremic patients, primarily because of immunological unsuitability. Interestingly, 67 of the 129 allegedly healthy donor candidates who were evaluated medically exhibited significant abnormalities that precluded their being accepted.
