AB This 16th volume of a series of soft cover books on general pulmonary and tuberculosis research is not a compendium of symposium presentations. It is not composed of the usual review articles, ie, uncritical summaries of scores of articles by a writer who has not made personal contributions to the subject. The authors of the four articles in this volume do make references to work of others, but essentially they present results of their own experimentation and observation.Two papers deal with subjects which many internists find unfamiliar: "Respiratory Surfaces," by S. Engel (strangely, German books usually give only the first initial of a writer's first name), and a companion piece, "Tension of Pulmonary Surfaces," by A. Kluge.Engel's article is in effect a recapitulation of the author's important contributions to knowledge of pulmonary microstructure.
