Forty-one pages (in four languages) are occupied by the prefaces to all three editions by the Chief Editor Dr. Hugh Clegg, who is the editor of British Medical Journal. There is also an explanation of the international code for the abbreviation of titles of periodicals. The first edition contained 4,000 titles, the second 4,800, and the third has the titles of 5,800 periodicals. An explanatory note to the second edition gives the meaning of an asterisk (*) preceding a title which indicates that the journal has ceased publication. In the third edition, Dr. Clegg's assiduity has added a dagger (†) preceding a title which means that the entry could not be checked. Dr. Clegg has given full credit to Mr. L. T. Morton and Mr. C. H. A. Fleurent, both on the staff of the British Medical Journal. Mr. Morton
