AB Any doctor who labors under the belief that physicians have been respected members of the community for substantial segments of historic time discloses in this belief a conspicuous ignorance of fact. The physician in France has been held up to ridicule routinely. In Voltaire's and Moliere's satirical thrusts, done most extensively and most perceptively, ridicule became a fine art. In this brilliant volume Honoré Daumier satirizes the physician, even as he had chastened the lawyer and politician, in a series of lithographs notable for their technical excellence. Their satirical, indeed their sardonic, view of the physicians of his time fill this beautifully printed edition. They were selected from the vast representation of Daumier lithographs in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. In the renowned series of "Robert Macaire" prints, a familiar hero of a current melodrama gave Daumier a suitable model for his great stabs at his neighbors and contemporaries. Using
