AB Here is recorded the authors' experience in 93 left heart catheterizations using the transbronchial route. The studies were properly limited to patients who were being studied to determine their need for surgical correction of deformities of the mitral and/or aortic valves. As a consequence they frequently could be compared to those made at the time of thoracotomy to confirm their validity at the time the diagnosis was established. The techniques of catheterization are nicely presented and discussed, and their recording apparatus is described. The frequency response of the systems used was not studied; however, the equipment was so nearly identical in the parallel systems used to record simultaneously, with equal sensitivity, the pressures in the aorta, left ventricle, and left atrium that the records are highly comparable.The limitations of this approach and the complications encountered are described in detail.
