AB F. L. Lucas, Fellow of King's College, Cambridge, and University Reader in English, whose essays I first noticed many years ago, by some unaccountable oversight on my part had gotten out of my range of vision. The book discussed here and several others which I have gathered on my shelves make amends for my dereliction. Lucas has written plays, poems, criticisms, essays, history, biographies of Beddoes, Crabbe, Rossetti and Tennyson; edited the works of John Webster; has dealt with the decline and fall of romantic ideals, edited Greek poetry and Greek drama, and otherwise not only embellished belles-lettres but added riches thereunto.
