RT Journal A1 Tuldrà A, Ferrer M, Fumaz CR, et al T1 MOnitoring adherence to hiv therapy JF Archives of Internal Medicine JO Archives of Internal Medicine YR 1999 FD June 28 VO 159 IS 12 SP 1376 OP 1377 DO UL http://dx.doi.org/ AB We designed a cross-sectional study to detect key variables in adherence to HAART. One hundred unselected patients with HIV in a general hospital during April 1998 were interviewed by a psychologist trained in adherence. They were asked about the number of pills skipped during the last month. Patients were also asked about variables related to adherence (Table 1) and completed the Profile of Mood States questionnaire.2 The percentage of adherence was calculated with the following formula: (number of pills taken/number of pills prescribed)×100. To test the veracity of the self-reported information, blood samples of 25 randomly selected patients were obtained and drug levels of protease inhibitors were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography.3 We compared the adherence-related data by assessing the percentage of patients with a rate of compliance higher than 95% ( Table 1).
