The same guidelines1 encourage investigation for specific pathogens that would significantly alter standard treatment. Rational use of antibiotics, using an appropriate pathogen-focused agent or narrowing empirical therapy, may decrease cost, drug adverse events, and the threat of antibiotic resistance.1- 4
