RT Journal A1 Brook RD, Rajagopalan S T1 Can what you breathe trigger a stroke within hours?: Comment on “ambient air pollution and the risk of acute ischemic stroke” JF Archives of Internal Medicine JO Archives of Internal Medicine YR 2012 FD February 13 VO 172 IS 3 SP 235 OP 236 DO 10.1001/archinternmed.2011.1214 UL http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/archinternmed.2011.1214 AB Air pollution is a pervasive consequence of modern societies. Beyond being an environmental hazard, several pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) pose significant health threats.1 Fine PM (<2.5 μm in diameter; PM2.5) is a heterogeneous mixture of compounds (eg, carbon, sulfates, nitrates, and metals) principally derived from the combustion of fossil fuels. Given the billions of people exposed, the adverse effects of PM represent a major global health epidemic.2
