We used a similar method to the one developed by Brown and colleagues2 and measured mobility (using patient self-report) during hospital stays for acute illness among older adults in general medical units. In addition to frequency of ambulation and transfer, the original scale was modified to include an evaluation of distance (classified as inside or outside the patient's hospital room). Scores ranged from 0 to 14, with higher scores indicating higher mobility.
