Unlike licensure, physicians can (and many do) practice without board certification. The hallmark of Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is that it is a physician-driven and a voluntary, self-regulatory process to help the public know that physicians have met a standard of competence in their chosen field of practice.
