This is a book-form publication of Supplement 330 to Acta medica scandinavica The significance
of the study warrants its appearance in book form for wider distribution in this
country.
The study offers proof of the effectiveness of the Norwegian system of medicine in finding
answers to difficult medical problems. Full time, for six years, was devoted to this study by
Bjerkelund, an Assistant Physician to the Ullevål Hospital in Oslo.
Patients with myocardial infarctions admitted to the medical departments of the Ullevål
Hospital from July, 1950, to July, 1953, formed the basis of the study. During the acute stage,
all patients were treated with anticoagulants. One month later, the surviving patients were
divided equally into control and treated groups. Only patients under the age of 76 were included,
and the division was made on a ward basis. This method resulted in comparable
groups. Two hundred twenty-seven patients were originally available.
