In our recent review of anaphylaxis in the ARCHIVES,1 we sought to draw attention to the size of the potential pool of patients with allergies at risk for this catastrophic event and tried to use the relatively sparse and incomplete published literature to make such estimates. We appreciate the letter by Sicherer and colleagues, who commented that food-related allergic and anaphylactic reactions are certainly a major fraction of all such phenomena. In this instance, as they point out, our published source is based on fairly rigorous criteria for the definition of anaphylaxis.2 Thus, in contrast with other exposures such as insect stings or drugs, we were not addressing the broader topic of allergic reactions.
