Emanuel's1 review article on euthanasia presents the results of six studies of physician attitudes and practices regarding euthanasia. In New York, the Committee on Bioethical Issues of the Medical Society of the State of New York randomly surveyed 500 internists and 500 surgeons about their attitudes toward euthanasia and its possible legalization. Fifty-four percent of the 1000 physicians responded. The results follow: 48% of internists and 38% of surgeons in New York State are in favor of legalizing euthanasia; 56% of internists and 39% of surgeons consider it ethical for a physician to participate in active euthanasia; and 42% of internists and 31% of surgeons said that they would
