I appreciated Dalen's article entitled "An Apple a Day or an Aspirin a Day?" in the June issue of the Archives.1 Although it is an excellent analysis of the pertinent literature on how much aspirin to take to minimize cardiovascular disease, it avoids the issue raised by the title. Apples contain salicylates and are listed as a food to be avoided in patients with aspirin sensitivity. Is the dose in one apple sufficient to reduce the risk of strokes and myocardial infarctions? Does an apple a day keep the cardiologist away?
