To the Editor.—A new workscale was recently reported that is able to accurately depict the disability associated with fibrositis.1 This remarkable scale is so accurate that little difference can be seen between multiple joint functional assessments obtained in fibrositis when compared with rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, the only single assessment discriminating between the two was wrist weakness. (Has anyone seen a fibrositic patient with disabled wrists?)
Coincidentally, at this same time, the Drug Information Association, Maple Glen, Pa, was devoting its annual meeting to cost/benefit assessments.2 The wave of future health delivery will be determined not by doctors, hospitals, or even potent pills ("a small-ticket item") but, rather, the cost/benefit ratio of health care interventions. Thus disability, hospitalization, complications, and even death can now be reduced to convenient metric scales.
