I am pleased and honored to begin to serve as editor of the Archives. The Archives was first published in 1908 with Joseph L. Miller as the first editor. In the ensuing eight decades, its editors have been N. C. Gilbert (1937 to 1950), Paul S. Rhoads (1950 to 1962), William B. Bean (1962 to 1968), Morton D. Bogdonoff (1968 to 1976), and Alfred Soffer (1976 to 1987).
As modern medicine has emerged during these last 80 years, the Archives has become a major source of continuing medical education for the modern clinician. In 1987, with a circulation of 83 000, the Archives is the largest of the nine specialty journals published by the American Medical Association, and the fourth largest peer-reviewed medical journal in the United States.
The Archives is not a specialty journal aimed just at the internist, family practitioner, and medical subspecialist; rather it is a journal
