Dependent edema, ascites, and exertional dyspnea devel[ill]d in a patient seven months after pericardiectomy for [ill]strictive pericarditis. Cardiac catheterization documented [ill]strictive physiology. At the second operation, he was [ill]nd to have extensive mediastinal fibrosis that encased the [ill]rt. Postmortem examination showed a fibrocartilagenous [ill]skeleton that encased both ventricles. Possible etiologies this unusual reconstriction are discussed.
