This is the third edition of Bates' book, which remains the benchmark for books dealing with the physical examination. Although the format is essentially unchanged from previous editions, the text has undergone extensive revision. In each chapter, following the discussion of anatomy and physiology, is a section dealing with changes with age. Another delightful addition is a chapter entitled "Clinical Thinking: From Data to Plan" with emphasis on the process on clinical thinking. While the book is intended primarily for the teaching of skills to medical students, it represents an excellent refresher source for established clinicians as well.
