To the Editor.
—Dr Soffer's recent EDITORIAL entitled "Case Reports of Untoward Drug Reactions, Adverse Events, and Rare Diseases" in the July Archives (1982;142:1271-1272) emphasizes the need for peer review of adverse drug reaction data. He further states that funds must be obtained from foundations, government sources, or the pharmaceutical industry for this purpose. In September 1980, the Food and Drug Administration awarded a three-year contract to the American Academy of Dermatology to establish a reporting system that would simplify the collection of new, unusual, and rare dermatologic adverse drug reactions. We have devised and implemented such a system and made it known to dermatologists through announcements in the dermatology literature and direct mail pieces to our members. To date, more than 800 reports have been received. With our system, dermatologists are encouraged to use a 24-hour toll-free phone number to report adverse drug reactions. All phone calls are received
