Morphine, Diabetes, and Lipid Metabolism

To the Editor.  —In a recent article, we reported increased levels of glycosylated hemoglobin (Hb Alc) that demonstrated the existence of an altered glycemic control in addicts similar to that seen in diabetics.1Impaired lipid metabolism is a widely recognized phenomenon in diabetics,2 for this reason, we measured the levels of plasma glucose, Hb Alc, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein A and B in 20 male opiate addicts (aged, 23 ± 3.6 years; weight, 68.4 ± 4.5 kg [mean ± SD]) and in 20 healthy male control subjects who were matched for age (24 ± 3.6 years) and weight (69 ± 3.87 kg).The selected addicts had no humoral signs of liver damage.Confirming the results of our previous study,1 the concentration of Hb Alc was significantly increased in the addicts (7.1 ± 0.15%) than in the control subjects (6.2 ± 0.18%), P<.001).
