To the Editor.
—While reviewing old medical journals I was shocked and horrified to read in the October 1981 Archives (141:1407) of the murders that had occurred in quest of determining the role of lactic acid metabolism. My shock was surpassed only by the callous manner in which it was reported by Phil Gunby. I would like to know what has been done to bring these investigators to justice.Of course I refer to Gunby's statement that rats were killed so that their organs could be studied immediately after exercise and the subsequent statement that Brooks and colleagues subsequently performed similar experiments with human volunteers. By God, those are real volunteers who gave their all for science! Or just how did Brooks and colleagues obtain their human volunteers?
