In Reply.  We are confident that the next reading of Ulysses by Shen and Soldo will help them realize that the authors of "Syphilis as a Major Theme of James Joyce's Ulysses" were not hunting wildly for symbols but attempting to bring to the attention of their readers a few of the symbols Joyce himself put into the book. Meanwhile we will reply to two specific points raised.

  1. "Ulysses is far too complex a work to pigeonhole it in this way." Shen and Soldo did not read our title very closely. We used the indefinite article "a" not the definite article "the." Moreover, we wrote in our third sentence, "Because of Joyce's technique of interweaving many themes, syphilis is so interwoven with other ideas that for the sake of clarity we will limit our arguments to five main points."

  1. "Furthermore, the authors also point out that the novel begins and ends with
