Computerized Tomography in Follow-up of Exophthalmos

To the Editor.  —The efficacy of highdose therapy with steroids in malignant exophthalmos is well established.1 We were recently able to prove the value of computerized tomographic (CT) scanning of the orbit in the follow-up and evaluation of the results of treatment.

Report of a Case.  —A 44-year-old man with malignant exophthalmos of the left eye, euthyroid after subtotal thyroidectomy for thyrotoxicosis, was hospitalized in our endocrinology department. One year prior to the present illness, his right eye had been enucleated in another hospital because of prolapse due to severe exophthalmos. On admission, he had left exophthalmos, class 5,2 of 28 mm by Hertel exophthalmometry. He received 100 mg of prednisone per day for five days, with no effect.
