Before discussing "uncom- mon," let's first ask what anemia is? Next, what is microcytosis, 82 cuμ or 80 cuμ? Next, how is this diagnosis established? And which "chronic diseases" are included? Then we must recognize that the catchments of referral centers differ. Do my referring physicians send me all of their cases of anemia? Do they send all of their cases of anemia of chronic disease?
Erslev in the textbook of Williams et al states that "many patients" have microcytic red cells.1 In the textbook of Mengel et al, Wheby gives no figures.2 Wintrobe et al say that microcytosis is less common than hypochromia.3 Leavell and Thorup do not mention the syndrome.4 Linman says that in "few patients" microcytes are evident.5
