Kaplan's little book is primarily designed for the patient, but would make for valuable reading by the physician especially if his patient has already read the book. The material is fairly sophisticated but easy to understand. It certainly ought to help the reasonably intelligent patient to understand the problem, including the need for continued treatment and follow up even when things are going well. Since patients want and have a right to know about their condition and treatment these days, this book and hopefully ones similar to it could represent an important bridge between the physician and his patient. This book could help take the pressure off both of them.
