The festschrift assembled by the Alumni Association and their special committee has been inspiring to all of us. I would like to express my personal gratitude to all persons who helped to make this symposium possible. Although the planning committee has linked my name with this symposium and I deeply appreciate their generosity, I would urge that this elegant program be regarded as a celebration for the entire University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry as its 50th anniversary approaches. Since several of the departments, including medicine, were started in 1924, they are in their 51st year, so that celebration now seems appropriate. My teachers and able colleagues deserve most of the credit for accomplishments that have been cited. I prefer to consider myself an intermediary in transmitting your kind and generous remarks.
