In this monograph, the author successfully summarizes present knowledge concerning the adverse biological effects of radiation on the skeleton. It deals with the effects of bone-seeking radionuclides, particularly radium, strontium, and plutonium as well as the effects of external radiation. There are chapters on radiobiological considerations, morphologic and physiologic effects of radiation, tumors induced by skeletal irradiation, and clinical effects of both external and internal radiation. There are also separate chapters dealing specifically with radium, strontium, plutonium, and other isotopes.

This is more than a review of recent clinical and experimental studies. It is a well-organized, scholarly work in which the author discusses the implications of various investigations and offers a critical appraisal, where appropriate. Numerous tables and graphs summarizing these investigations are included.
