This book is a continuation of a series of Exercises in Diagnostic Radiology originated by Lucy Frank Squire. The purpose of vol 4 is explained in the preface: "there can be no isolation of the roentgen examination from the patient and his medical problems and personal concerns." To demonstrate this eternal truth, medical students in their radiology elective at Massachusetts General Hospital were given case histories and asked to select, in sequential steps, appropriate diagnostic studies, each time justifying their selections. The 41 cases in the book are from the teaching files. The reader is given the same opportunity to apply logical thought processes to decision-making, a method in keeping with the current problem-oriented approach to diagnosis and medical education.
Students, clinicians, and radiologists will reap dividends from the exercises. Educators may find the technique applicable to other diagnostic endeavors.
